1,500,000
water contaminated child deaths every year
what are nkd LIFE doing to help?
Unfortunately, in our world not all children have access to clean drinking water. Lack of access to clean water and sanitation in third world countries kills children. Diarrhoea remains the second leading cause of nearly one in five child deaths – about 1.5 million each year – killing more young children than AIDS, malaria and measles combined.
It is a tragic statistic that every 20 seconds, a child dies from water-related diseases, and 24,000 children under the age of five die every day.
We believe this is unacceptable, so we created a self-sustaining project which allows all our customers to get involved in battling this crisis.
For every litre a consumer enjoys of clean, safe, great tasting water using one of our products, nkd will provide the same for a child or family in need around the world.
and how is that making a difference?
We co-ordinate with local charities to set up easy access water filtration points in developing countries that saves lives, prevent suffering and bring self-sufficiency to under privileged communities.
Currently we are working together in Kenya with the Dutch foundations “Tenda Pamoja” and “Stichting Wenzi”, who are running 40 secondary schools, south of Mombasa. Besides education, most of the schools also take care for rainwater harvesting, as there is no municipal water supply in these small rural communities. At two schools (Mwamtsefu and Mwereni) a nkd provided water filtration system has been installed, to purify the water.
During and just after the rain season the system is connected to small ponds. When these ponds are dry, the system is moved to the “kiosk” and connected to the storage tanks and thus providing clean drinking water during the dry season. They provide all school classes every morning with clean water, and the people of the village can buy the clean water at the kiosk. With this income, they can service the system and save for replacement filters and parts. Both installed systems have been donated by nkd Life through the contributions from the sale of nkd products and are maintained by the organization that is running the school supported by the two Dutch foundations, who regularly visit these places.
